Shaykh Khalil al-Nahlawi (d. 1350/1931) was a Hanafi jurist. His book, al-Durar al-Mubaha, reflects the integrity for which he was known as well as his real-world experience as a prominent merchant in Damascus. Al-Durar al-Mubaha is a guide to right action and proper comportment, in all matters of personal conduct: consumption of food and drink; dress and clothing; sight and touch; earning an income and practicing a craft; virtues and blameworthy traits of the heart.


The purpose of this course is to equip the student with knowledge of the standards that Allah Most High expects of us in our personal conduct. It will teach us not just correct behavior, but the proper attitude a Muslim is meant to have towards the blessings Allah has provided, and the outlook towards creation that this embodies.


This course addresses the issues of how to act, how to think about, and how to understand the consequences of our personal conduct.

Nahlawi's Al-Durar Al-Mubaha fi Al-Hadhr wal-Ibaha is a concise but beautiful guide to Adab, or the proper conduct of a Muslim. It provides – through stories as well as Fiqh rules – the proper way that a Muslim should behave in their personal conduct, in accordance with the Sunna as recommended by the Hanafi school.

Khalil ibn ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Shaybani al-Nahlawi (d. 1350 AH /1931 CE) was a prominent merchant and well-respected figure of early 20th-century Damascus. His book is a practical guide to living with dignity in human society.


He was a respected Hanafi jurist and merchant. Al-Durar Al-Mubaha fi Al-Hadhr wal-Ibaha is his most promoinent work. His work reflects his own experience as a prominent figure of Muslim society, and thus was taught and commented upon by jurists and spiritual masters after him.
