About the text:

Known in Arabic simply as the Arba’in, or "The Forty," this compilation of Prophetic hadith is among the most widely-known and frequently read. Imam al-Nawawi’s collection is often the initial, and sometimes the sole, Hadith text that many Muslims study in their lifetime.

Each hadith in this collection serves as a foundational proof text in at least one area of Islamic sciences. Given their significance, these hadith are also exceptionally rich in meaning. One of Allah's gifts to His Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) was the ability to convey volumes of wisdom in just a few words, and the hadith of the Arba’in exemplifies this brilliance.

About the Author:

Imam Nawawi is a name unfamiliar to no scholar. Whenever his name is mentioned throughout the Islamic world, it is spoken with reverence, honor, and homage to an intellectual and spiritual giant whose contributions to Islam are unparalleled.

He was Yahya bin Sharaf, Abu Zakariyya al-Hizami al-Nawawi al-Ash‘ari al-Shafi‘i. Born in Muharram, 631 AH, in his native town of Nawa, near Damascus. From a young age, Allah blessed him with great piety and a strong inclination towards the faith.

His father recounts, "When Yahya was seven years old, he slept beside me. It was the 27th night of Ramadan, halfway through the night, he woke up and inquired, 'Father, what is this light that has filled the house?' My wife and I woke up, but we couldn’t see anything." From this incident, we understood that it was Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power)."

In 649 AH, Imam Nawawi relocated to Damascus, where his father enrolled him in Madrassa al-Rawahiyya. There, he received instruction in al-Wasit, al-Muhaddhab, al-Jam‘ bayn al-Sahihayn, Sahih Muslim, al-Luma‘, and various other subjects.

He passed away at the age of 45, yet his enduring legacy lives on through the numerous works he authored, which have been revered for centuries following his death. To this day, his writings are studied worldwide.

Imam Nawawi's passed away in the year 676 AH. After returning from a journey to Bayt al-Maqdis, he fell ill in his hometown of Nawa. He passed away on the 24th of Rajab, and his grave now rests in the village of Nawa.
