Asalamu alaikum. Sheikh Faraz mentioned that the Ulema say that people within a 40 house radius are considered neighbours. Does this mean 40 surrounding houses in total e.g 20 on each side? Or does it mean 40 to the left and 40 to the right?

The importance that is given to the neighbors in the Hadith and Qur'an would suggest that it is 40 in all directions. Those who are closest to your house door are given precedence over those farther.
