Your Questions, Answered

Is Ignorance an Excuse?

Shaykh Yusuf Weltch explains that, in general, ignorance of essential Islamic knowledge is not excused for any Muslim, except for those who genuinely lack access to knowledge due to their location or circumstances. If someone has no access to knowledge, they are excused until access becomes available.

However, if access is possible, individuals are obligated to seek knowledge progressively, and they are excused for what they have not yet learned as long as they are actively pursuing it. The threshold for “maximal” study is not specified, but one should seek the minimum level of knowledge personally obligatory for them.
