Necessary attributes established only by textual evidence

Necessary attributes established only by textual evidence

Salamualaykoum,

We saw in the text 12+1 attributes of Allah. These are rationally necessary. (Otherwise, if they are possible they would be created).

At the same time, some of these attributes (e.g., Speech) can only be affirmed from textual evidence.

How can we claim that these attributes are rationally necessary, while it seems they can only be affirmed by text and not pure reason?

May Allah reward you for your efforts.

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Thank you for your question regarding the attributes of Allah and their affirmation through reason and textual evidence. Understanding the relationship between rational necessity and textual affirmation is indeed important when it comes to the attributes of Allah.

When we speak about the rational necessity of certain attributes of Allah, we mean that reason, when applied correctly and in accordance with sound intellectual principles, leads us to affirm those attributes as necessary qualities of Allah's existence. These attributes are derived through rational arguments based on logical reasoning and reflection on the nature of Allah.

However, it is important to note that reason alone may not be sufficient to fully comprehend or affirm all of Allah's attributes. Some attributes, such as Speech, can only be affirmed through textual evidence, such as the Qur'an and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The textual evidence provides us with specific guidance on how to understand and affirm these attributes.

So, while reason can establish the rational necessity of certain attributes, textual evidence complements our understanding and provides the specific details and context necessary for a comprehensive understanding of those attributes.

The combination of reason and textual evidence is essential in our approach to understanding the attributes of Allah. Reason helps us establish the foundational understanding of Allah's attributes, while the texts provide us with the specific details and guidance on how to comprehend and affirm them.

It is important to approach the study of Allah's attributes with humility and reverence, recognizing that our human intellect has its limitations. Reason can guide us to some extent, but ultimately, our understanding of Allah's attributes is reliant on divine revelation.

May Allah bless you in your pursuit of knowledge and grant you deep understanding of His attributes. Ameen.
