Tribulations, whether they affect us as individuals or as an umma, can push us to the limit of what we can endure. It is at that time that people need a firm grasp of why they happen, and what their purpose is.

Islam teaches us that everything that happens to a Believer - easy or difficult - is a source of benefit for him. Knowing some of the specific benefits makes patience and expecting rewards through those difficulties much easier. This is why scholars have penned many works on this topic, and the work of al-‘Izz b. ‘Abd al-Salam is one of the more well known and concise works on the topic.

Knowing as ‘Sultan al-‘Ulama’ (the Authority of Scholars), the author was a major scholar who had mastered the Shafi‘i and Maliki schools of law, and is considered one of the saints of Islam. This program gives a deeper insight into the beneficial work and provides much needed context to Muslims today to understand the wisdom behind the calamities that affect us as individuals, communities, and an umma as a whole.
